Madurkhati plant fiber placemat

History

These placemats embody ancestral know-how. That of the cultivation and braiding of madur reed fiber, which grows in the marshy areas of West Bengal.
A cotton warp spun by hand, then erected on a manual loom. A dyeing and weaving technique very close to Ikat: the design is created by first dyeing the fibers, at precise intervals, so that it is the braiding that reveals it, when the craftsman passes rod after rod, each strand of madur to form the weft. A delicate alignment of plant fibers, where natural color and indigo tint mix and intertwine, to form these traditional patterns, and this very silky touch.
A symbol of rural Bengali life diverted to dress your table with an astonishing extra soul. MADUR is eco-responsible and very practical, it delights in a little wipe with a sponge. After all, it is the art of the reed: fine and peaceful, flexible but imperturbable.
