Made in India using the traditional "cut work" technique: The black fabric is first fixed onto the natural canvas and then the pattern is hand cut to create the design and reveal the fabric underneath.
The pattern to be cut out is printed onto the black fabric using ink that is then washed off. The black fabric is then attached to the canvas fabric underneath, so that it does not separate. The craftsman cuts the black fabric by hand to reveal the pattern and the base fabric, which is the canvas. The cut out fabric is then hand sewn onto the canvas. This operation is carried out with great care and skill.
The technique of "cutwork" is mainly used in the state of Rajasthan, India, as well as in Kutch, in the state of Gujarat.
